New Diagnostics for Infectious Diseases - ND4ID


The Nb4D group participates in this Marie Sklodowska-Curie Research Programme whose aim is to train Early Stage Researchers (ESR). Within the framework of the project "New Diagnostics for Infectious Disease" a number of top institutes throughout Europe will jointly hire 15 PhD students who will receive an extensive network-wide training bridging the clinical biotechnological and technical aspects of diagnostic development.

There is a clinical need for more rapid point of care (POC) in vitro diagnostics (IVD) for the effective clinical management of patients with infectious diseases.

ND4ID offers training in diverse disciplines with different clinical, technological and market-oriented viewpoints. Through a set synergistic research projects on novel POC assays, targeting the most important and urgent clinical needs at world leading academic or private sector research groups, the ESRs are offered a complete training programme preparing them to be lead players in the future IVD field.

The Nb4D group is principally involved with ESR12 - An optofluidic microwell structure for the rapid determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of antibiotics which falls under the greater strategem of "novel concepts in support of clinical management of AMR". ES12 will develop an integrated low-cost real-time polymer based photonic lab on a chip (PhLoC) to continuously monitor cell cultures with the final aim to evaluate the mimum inhibitory concentration.

The group will also be involved in various training events which will take place throughout this project.
