NUTRACÈUTICS I RADICALS LLIURES

La recerca al grup de Nutracèutics i Radicals Lliures consisteix en l’avaluació exhaustiva de nutracèutics i components funcionals alimentaris com a promotors de la salut. Els nutracèutics (polifenols antioxidants, àcids grassos omega-3, iminosucres) són productes naturals obtinguts de subproductes de les indústries agrícola i pesquera o bé mitjançant processos biosintètics respectuosos amb el medi ambient. El grup està centrat en la recerca de solucions a les modernes epidèmies de l’obesitat i la diabetis. Estem especialment interessats en l’estrès oxidatiu, que és un procés de deteriorament induit per radicals lliures que es manifesta en la diabetis i altres patologies tals com la malaltia cardiovascular, càncer i l’Alzheimer. L’estudi dels radicals lliures, la seva reactivitat, el seu ús com a sondes per mesurar l’activitat antioxidant i el seu control o eliminació per part dels nutracèutics són objectius centrals en la nostra recerca. L’activitat antioxidant s’avalua per Ressonància Paramagnètica Electrònica mitjançant tècniques “spin trapping” i “radical scavenging”. També s’utilitza l’anàlisi d’isoprostans com a mètode referencia per mesurar estrès oxidatiu in vivo.
El grup prioritza estudis in vivo amb models animals (rates) de pre-diabetis en els quals avaluem combinacions de diferents nutracèutics amb activitats complementàries. Els nostres resultats més recents mostren el potencial d’iminosucres com la fagomina per minimitzar l’aparició de factors de risc de patir diabetis tals com la resistència a la insulina i l’alteració de la tolerància a la glucosa. L’estudi de la relació entre microbiota intestinal, la integritat de l’intestí i l’estat de salut general de l’organisme hoste és també un objectiu principal en els darrers estudis del grup. Això s’emmarca en una tendència de futur en alimentació funcional centrada en el manteniment de l’equilibri de la microbiota intestinal.
