{"id":7740,"date":"2021-02-12T16:12:48","date_gmt":"2021-02-12T15:12:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iqac.csic.es\/iqac-celebrates-international-day-of-women-and-girls-in-science-11th-february\/"},"modified":"2026-06-16T11:11:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T09:11:10","slug":"iqac-celebrates-international-day-of-women-and-girls-in-science-11th-february","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iqac.csic.es\/en\/iqac-celebrates-international-day-of-women-and-girls-in-science-11th-february\/","title":{"rendered":"IQAC celebrates International Day of Women and Girls in Science, 11th February"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>Institute for Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia (IQAC-CSIC)<\/strong> celebrated the<strong> International Day of Women and Girls in Science<\/strong>, dated on 11th February by the United Nations, to promote full and equal access to participation in science for women and girls and to recognize their role in science and technology.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idaea.csic.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC)<\/strong><\/a>, and as a scheduled activity of the project <a href=\"http:\/\/csic4girls.es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>CSIC4Girls<\/strong><\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iqac.csic.es\/mcs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Medicinal Chemistry and Synthesis (MCS) group<\/strong><\/a>&#8216;s researchers <strong>Anna Duran, Maria Ricart<\/strong> and <strong>Laia Josa<\/strong> made an online talk to seven school classes of Barcelona and Ibiza, revisiting the women scientists&#8217; history behind the greatest inventions, and showing them how a chemist works in the lab. After the talk, students made a lot of questions.<\/p>\n<p>Researcher <strong>Gemma Triola,\u00a0<\/strong>from the research group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iqac.csic.es\/research\/departments\/biological-chemistry\/chemical-biology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Chemical Biology<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0was invited to a debate organized by Fundaci\u00f3n la Caixa with other scientific women, talking about women in science. &#8220;There are 50% of female pre-doctoral students, but the % decreases a lot when the post-doctorate arrives&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The IQAC-CSIC director <strong>Gemma Fabri\u00e0s,\u00a0<\/strong>from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rubam.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Research Unit BioActive Molecules RUBAM<\/strong><\/a> group\u00a0was also interviewd in the outreach science podcast &#8220;Ci\u00e8ncia Peri\u00f2dica&#8221;, talking about her career and the role of women in science.<\/p>\n<p>Besides, an iniciative organized by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cid.csic.es\/\"><strong>Center of Research and Development (CID-CSIC)<\/strong><\/a> Library, the CID-CSIC gender equality comission and the Communication Department was also done on this day.
