The Knowledge Transfer Unit promotes and manages the relationships between IQAC’s researchers and the industry.
Contribution to the benefit of the society is our final purpose, promoting innovation and supporting the transfer of capacities, knowledge and technologies developed at IQAC.
Different collaborative approaches are offered:
- Technical and scientific consultancy taking advantage of IQAC researchers’ expertise.
- Collaborative and Research Contracts to solve technological needs and industrial challenges.
- Licensing of technologies protected by patents or by other intellectual property protection modes.

As a result of an excellent research, IQAC’s researchers have generated technologies and know-how in different technological fields that, after licensed to the industrial sector, can be developed into real products.
The Institute has a number of patented technologies and materials available to be transferred to companies through licensing agreements.

MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS
IQAC_072 Monitoring of deregulated Acid Ceramidase activity for diagnostics
The method here presented allows easy monitoring of the ACDase activity (ACDase) in lysosomal intact cells by using a specific substrate of ACDase. ACDase deficiency and storage of undegraded ceramides in lysosomes cause Farber disease. Currently, measurement of ACDase can be performed by genetic testing or by biochemical analyses, which require long and laborious analytical methods involving radiolabeling, being only available to highly specialized laboratories.
IQAC_061 Diagnostic method for the detection of Cystinuria
Precise and early diagnosis of cystinuria disease, through urine testing. It is based on dynamic molecular networks to produce a measurable signal when some substances are linked to a specific molecule.
IQAC_047 Immunoassay for rapid diagnosis of infectious diseases caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Immunochemical method for diagnosis of infections produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, one of the leading causes of infections in hospitalised and immune compromised patients. The immunoassay is fast and efficient, with low LOD and adaptable to point-of care devices.
IQAC_053 Immunoassay for detection of infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus
Immunochemical method for diagnosis of infections produced by Staphylococcus aureus, an important cause of community and hospital acquired infections. The immunoassay is specific, sensitive and adaptable to point-of care devices.
IQAC_059 Immunoassay for detection of lipoprotein (a) to determine cardiovascular risk
Monoclonal antibodies able to determine risk of cardiovascular disease based on the quantification of lipoprotein (a), taking into consideration the variability on its kringle IV type 2 domain (KIV-2) repeats.
IIQAC_019 Test for early diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis based on chimeric fibrin and filaggrin peptides
An ELISA using chimeric citrullinated peptides derived from a-fibrin and filaggrin chains has been developed for early diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis. Tested in sera from 900 patients, it shows improved sensitivity and prognostic value, as it is able to identify patients with aggressive disease and works where other commercial tests failed.

IQAC_060 Non-glycosidic analogues of α-GalCer as NKT cell activators
Novel non-glycosidic analogues of alpha-galactosylceramide (α-GalCer) that induce proliferation of natural killer T (NKT) cells, involved in immune responses. These compounds are versatile modulators of cytokine production and induce a strong and efficient immunitary response. They have potential as drugs in single therapy or as adjuvants for vaccine, antibody or cell immunotherapies in cancer, infections or autoimmune diseases.

IQAC_052 Treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
Treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases, in particular steatohepatitis, based on the use of a family of fatty acid amides with phenylalkylamines related compounds (OLHHA), which induces a reduction of liver damage.
DRUG DELIVERY
IQAC_007 Bicosomes: bicelles encapsulated in liposomes and their application in diluted systems. LICENSED
A new sort of liposomes containing bicelles, called bicosomes, in such a way that bicelle morphology is preserved in diluted environments. Bicosomes allow encapsulation and administration of drugs, dyes or pigments acting as carrier for substances of cosmetic, dermatological and pharmaceutical interest in diluted water solutions and as permeability enhancers of biological membranes.

IQAC_056 Biocatalysis leading to functionalized molecules for different chemical segments.
Aldolase able to catalyze C-C bond formation at MOLAR aldehyde concentrations. With broad substrate acceptance (aldehydes and keto-acids), many functionalized products are synthesized at high productivities for industrial production. Application to L-homoserine production
IQAC_057 Industrial (poly)hydroxylate compounds by enzymatic catalysis.
FSA enzyme variants with improved chemo- and enantioselectivity in aldol carboligation reactions (single C-C bond formation) rendering (poly)hydroxylate products of industrial interest, such as Roche ester or of 4-chloro-3-hydroxybutanal, under environmentally friendly conditions.

IQAC_063 Synthetic Human Skin model based on an artificial membrane containing lanoline
Synthetic Human Skin model useful to study the capacity of permeation and percutaneous absorption of cosmetic and pharmaceutical actives.
BIOSENSORS
IQAC_058 Multiplexing liquid system in biosensor microchambers
New device that allows the simultaneous multiple analyte analysis in a fluid by biosensors dipped into a plurality of microchambers, in which such fluid is supplied, with identical flow, in independently controlled functional time periods. This technology can be applied to the on-site quantification of pollutants and other analytes, especially for environmental control in sea or river waters.
IQAC_003 Three-dimensional biosensor for detection of analytes in a biological sample
Three-dimensional impedimetric biosensor that allows a direct detection of analytes from a biological sample of human, veterinarian or environmental origin. The biosensor increases significantly the sensitivity to changes in impedance deriving from biochemical processes in comparison with conventional planar devices (2 orders of magnitude in signal/noise relation).

IQAC_ 064.Multicomponent particles for genetic modification of eukaryotic cells and selection of modified cells
Method based on multicomponent particles to enhance transfection of non viral genetic material in eukaryotic cells.
FOOD SAFETY
IQAC_017 Immunoassay to detect residual fluoroquinolone-type antibiotics in food LICENSED
Haptens to generate antibodies to fluoroquinolone-based antibiotics for determining their residues in food. The immunoassay is fast and efficient, has detection limits of 0.025-6 ppb depending on the fluoroquinolone, matrix and animal species and detects fluoroquinolones undetectable with other methods.
