Dr. Amadeu Llebaria
Amadeu Llebaria graduated in chemical engineering at Institut Químic de Sarrià (IQS, Barcelona) and in chemistry at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). He obtained a PhD in chemical engineering (IQS, 1990) and a PhD in chemistry (University of Barcelona, 1992) working in synthesis methods mediated by transition metals. After a postdoctoral period in Germany (Gottingen, Armin de Meijere) as Alexander von Humboldt fellow he obtained a scientist position at CSIC (Spanish National Research Council) where he has developed his scientific career. During this time he has been working in different fields related to the synthesis and optimization of bioactive molecules. He has led several basic research and applied projects financed by public and private sources. His interests are related to the design and synthesis of molecules with biological activity. He is now working in different drug development projects in collaboration with biotech and pharmaceutical companies. The basic current research activities are related to the development of sugar mimetics and its therapeutic use in lysosomal storage diseases and as immunostimulants, and to give chemical support to collaborative projects in the role of glutamate receptors in pain. Research on light control of protein activity by means of small-molecule photoswitches has been started recently, with high potential for photopharmacology development and consolidation. The molecules have interesting uses as pharmacological tools in pharmacology, neurosciences, biochemistry and biology and show promise for radical innovations in drug development. He has a large experience in multidisciplinar collaborative research at the interface between chemistry, biochemistry and biology and in the development of molecules for biological and therapeutic use.
