Gemma Triola Guillem

Research Scientist

Gemma graduated in Pharmacy from the University of Barcelona in 1999 and completed her PhD at the IIQAB-CSIC in 2004 under the supervision of Prof. G. Fabriàs and A. Llebaria.

She subsequently joined Prof. H. Waldmann’s group at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology in Dortmund for postdoctoral studies.

After a period as a group leader at the same MPI in Dortmund, she moved to the IQAC-CSIC in 2012 as a tenured scientist and established the Chemical Biology Group.

During the last decade, she has worked on lipids and proteins and the study of their interactions.

Lipid attachment modulates protein localisation, interactions and function, and its dysregulation is associated with multiple diseases. This project will develop chemical and biological tools to synthesise and study lipid-modified proteins, with particular attention to Hedgehog cholesterylation, protein S-acylation, as well as the enzymes involved in their metabolism.
Proteins are modified through the covalent attachment of a wide variety of lipids, and these modifications regulate their localisation, interactions and function. This project aims to identify and quantify protein-bound lipids and generate modified proteins using chemical synthesis or semisynthesis methods.
