The development of specific, effective, and safe treatments for glaucoma patients, capable of reducing intraocular pressure and providing neuroprotection, constitutes an unmet medical need and is the main objective of the recently awarded project, coordinated between IQAC-CSIC and UB, entitled: “Next-generation lipid nanoparticles with self-assembled peptides for dual drug encapsulation: a step beyond biocompatible drug delivery systems for glaucomatous neurodegeneration”. The project, which will be carried out at IQAC-CSIC, will focus on the design and synthesis of self-assembled structures based on amphiphilic peptides (APs) for drug delivery to ocular tissues. APs, characterized by a structure with differentiated hydrophilic and hydrophobic components, have the ability to self-assemble in aqueous solution to form nanostructures that enable the encapsulation of poorly soluble drugs in aqueous solutions. Self-assembled APs, with the capacity to specifically target retinal ganglion cells, will improve the bioavailability of poorly soluble drugs in ocular tissues.
