The Purification, analysis, and characterization (PAC) of chemical compounds service is an IQAC-CSIC facility established in 2022 to support both the analysis and the qualitative and quantitative characterization of materials and chemical compounds for IQAC staff as well as other CSIC centers, private companies, universities, and other public organizations.
The service offers a wide variety of equipment. Depending on the type of provision, the service may be in self-service format (with prior training by the Responsible Staff) or in a service executed by the managers of the Service. Furthermore, the responsible team provides support on the operation of all equipment.
This HPLC equipment allows for the analysis of samples via FIA circuit or reverse-phase chromatographic separation. For analyte detection, the equipment is coupled to three different detectors: a photodiode array (PDA), a mass spectrometer (MS), and an evaporative light scattering detector (ELSD). This service is only available as self-service, following training by the CSIC Chemotheca staff.
The Biotage Initiator Robot microwave apparatus allows for microwave-assisted reactions. The evolution of temperature, pressure, and microwave power is recorded at all times. Its flexible operation allows for the automated combined use of large and small vials at any time and in any order. This service is only available as self-service, following training by the service managers.
This HPLC equipment features different detection systems: PDA/UV-Visible and/or evaporative light scattering (ELS). This service is only available as self-service.

It is possible to work at a maximum pressure of 2 atm and additionally operate in two independent systems (one for system A and another for system B). This service is only available as self-service.
The H-Cube Mini Plus is a safe and powerful flow reactor that generates high-pressure hydrogen through water electrolysis, allowing chemists to perform catalytic hydrogenations from atmospheric pressure up to 100 bar and work at temperatures from ambient up to 100°C in a matter of minutes.
Hydrogenation is one of the most important reactions in chemical synthesis, but the hazards of hydrogen limit its use. This equipment eliminates the dangers associated with hydrogenation by using in situ hydrogen generation and handling pyrophoric catalysts through pre-filled sealed catalyst cartridges (CatCarts).
The hydrogen generation system of the H-Cube Mini Plus can be easily disconnected to allow non-hydrogenation reactions, such as C-C coupling reactions, to be performed as well. This service is only available as self-service, following training by the service managers.
Perkin Elmer polarimeter for measuring the optical rotation of samples using a 1 ml volume cell with the possibility of temperature control. This service is only available as self-service.
SPS anhydrous solvent cabinet with the capacity to dispense the following solvents: ACN, Toluene, DMF, DCM, THF, diethyl ether. This service is only available as self-service, following training by the service managers.
The freeze dryer is used to separate water from a solution through freezing and subsequent sublimation of the ice under reduced pressure. The service has three freeze dryers available, all in self-service mode.
The muffle furnace is equipment that operates at high temperatures. It consists of a closed chamber covered with refractory material, which allows for uniform heat distribution inside, reaching temperatures up to 1,300°C. This service is only available as self-service.
The Synergy system produces Type I water (ultrapure water of 18.2 MΩ.cm at 25ºC). The water produced is suitable for the preparation of buffers for liquid chromatography, biochemistry experiments, isocratic or gradient solutions for HPLC analysis, culture media for bacteriological analysis or cell cultures, and solutions for spectrophotometry, spectroscopy, and other analytical techniques. This service is only available as self-service.
Avatar 360 FTIR spectrophotometer with various accessories to perform measurements on liquids, films, textile materials, and/or in powder form.
The Service has several attenuated total reflectance (ATR) accessories for measuring solid samples, films, or coatings (ATR with diamond crystal, Vertical-ATR, and Horizontal-ATR with ZnSe crystals) and liquid samples (cell with Horizontal-ATR). This service is available both as self-service and with the possibility of samples being processed by the service managers.
Cary 400 UV-Visible spectrophotometer (175–900 nm) to characterize, quantify, and perform reaction kinetics of chemical compounds. This service is available both as self-service and with the possibility of samples being processed by the service managers.
The Synergy H1 is a hybrid multi-mode microplate reader (230–999 nm). Detection methods include fluorescence intensity (FI), fluorescence polarization (FP), luminescence, and UV-visible absorbance. The instrument is modular, and upgrade options may be available.
In the field of life sciences, the Synergy H1 is used for ELISA assays, nucleic acids, protein quantification, enzymes, cell viability, and proliferation assays. This service is available both as self-service and with the possibility of samples being processed by the service managers.
The J-1500 model allows for the measurement of a CD spectrum in the vacuum UV region at 163 nm. As standard, its PMT detector allows measurement up to 900 nm; however, the addition of an optional second InGaAs detector allows for measurements with the highest sensitivity up to 1,600 nm.
