Dr. Ibane Abasolo is a scientific researcher at The Institute for Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia (IQAC-CSIC), where she leads the Nanomedicine for Therapeutic Applications group and coordinates the CIBER-BBN CB06/01/0012 group. Her research focuses on the development of advanced drug delivery systems for cancer and rare diseases, integrating chemistry, nanotechnology, biology, and artificial intelligence to design innovative new nanotherapies.

ReachGLIO is developing multifunctional nanomedicines to reach glioblastoma cells by crossing the blood–brain barrier and the blood–tumour barrier. By combining permeability-enhancing molecules with peptide-targeted nanoparticles, it aims to improve drug distribution in a highly heterogeneous brain tumour.
MELINA develops artificial intelligence and machine learning tools to improve how nanomedicines are designed, produced, and evaluated. By integrating chemical, physicochemical, and biological data, the project seeks to predict nanoparticle behavior more efficiently and accelerate the development of safer and more effective therapies.
HEAL is developing hybrid extracellular vesicle–liposome nanoparticles to deliver therapeutic enzymes to the organs affected by Fabry disease. With the support of AI and advanced models, it seeks to overcome the limitations of current enzyme replacement therapy.
Our vision is to create a smart digital pathology scanner that builds patient-specific tumour digital twins and simulates drug treatments. Using pancreatic cancer models, the project will integrate multi-omics, clinical data, AI and hardware design to help doctors personalize therapy.
