The CSIC4Girls project finishes celebrating an open science day for kids

Las chicas son de ciencias (CSIC4Girls) project finished with an open science day for kids at the Center of Research and Development (CID-CSIC). Led by the researcher Mar Viana, from the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC) , together with the IDAEA/IQAC Communication Department and funded by Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología (FECYT), the project aimed to promote scientific vocations among elementary school students. During one year, girls ages 6-12 have had the opportunity to get in touch with the scientific culture and do real experiments at home about environmental and chemistry science.

Approximately 40 children came to the last event where they participated in a workshop on plasma, the fourth state of matter, carried out by the researcher Ricardo Molina, of the Institute for Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia (IQAC-CSIC) and another workshop about polymers, conducted by the IQAC researcher Ramon Crehuet and IDAEA researcher Mercè Ratera.

Children could also read the comic ¿Qué significa ser científica? (What does it mean to be a scientist?), developed by Miriam Rivera, scientific illustrator, and based on the experiments and workshops conducted during the year.
