The management of stone pine for pine nut production: an alternative for many drylands in Catalonia

Since February 2023, the Bioactive Molecules Research Unit at IQAC-CSIC has been participating in this Knowledge Transfer Demonstration Activity, which is led by the Forest Science and Technology Centre of Catalonia.

The main objective of this project is to restore the production of Catalan pine nuts by promoting the productive potential of the species Pinus pinea as a sustainable fruit alternative for large areas of dryland. The aim is to provide the sector with guidance on how to carry out proper productive management of the stone pine, from plantation to harvest handling, taking into account the reproductive characteristics of the species. It also covers how to minimise the damage caused by the western conifer seed bug Leptoglossus occidentalis Heidemann (Hemiptera: Coreidae), and the impact of mass trapping of adult insects.

Results

Regarding this last point, the IQAC-CSIC has successfully addressed the synthesis of the species’ aggregation pheromone (called leptotrienol), making it possible to assess its effectiveness in capturing L. occidentalis under natural conditions. Based on a trial carried out between September and November 2024, it has been demonstrated that both females and males entering hibernation are attracted to this compound, which represents a significant step forward in the mass trapping of this insect.
