Photoswitchable beta-blockers for optimal control of intraocular pressure in glaucoma patients

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness. Its usual treatment relies on eye drops that can cause systemic side effects due to drug diffusion throughout the body. Furthermore, these therapies have limitations in efficacy and low adherence. The GLAUxIS project proposes an innovative solution based on photoswitchable beta-blockers activated by visible light directly in the eye. This strategy allows for precise control of drug activity in space and time, achieving a reduction in intraocular pressure and avoiding adverse effects in other organs. Through the GLAUxIS project, we aim to offer society a glaucoma treatment using safer, more effective, and patient-centered therapies.
